We started off with just a standard leash, but it didn't take too long to get tired of always having to hold on to it, especially when she's feeling a bit "pulley." We're working on her pulling, and she's definitely getting better, but one of the things that has made it a lot better is that I've switched from a standard leash that I'd hold with my hand to a Kurgo Quantum Leash, which is a "hands free" leash.
One thing to note though- if I'm running on steep or rugged trails, I tend to hold the leash rather than have it around my waist, so that if balance becomes an issue I can just let go rather than have her pull me over.
A nice option that this leash has is that it has a padded waist strap, so that if she does pull the nylon webbing doesn't dig in.
